Judges have shortlisted Billy Grogan as a finalist for Bricklaying Apprentice of the Year at The ABC Awards 2024.
With just a few weeks to go, until we find out who wins, we thought it would be great to showcase each apprentice, and celebrate their achievements.

What does Bricklaying mean to you and why did you choose to become a Bricklayer?
“The reason that I became interested in bricklaying and wanted an apprenticeship in the trade was that when I was working with my stepdad who has his own Multi-trade firm it was the one skill that really stood out for me and I wanted to learn more and expand on that. In 10 years time I would like to see myself to have progressed into senior management or owning my own bricklaying company. I get the opportunity to do private / domestic jobs at the weekends this helps me build my confidence in customer care, pricing jobs and using my skills in a different way to how I would use them on site. I want to be able to produce sound work that is of the highest quality for the client.”
“In my role at Galostar, I am charged with mentoring the apprentices alongside our Managing Director, Tony Chapman. Billy has always stood out as a hardworking, diligent, conscientious apprentice. Billy’s enthusiasm for the job is infectious and encourages the other apprentices to apply themselves in the same manner.
It is testament to Billy that regardless of what project manager he has or the project he is working on, he invariably finds himself working on the face brickwork with the bricklayers and becomes part of the ‘gang’
His attention to detail and willingness to learn why he is doing something is second to none. Billy is currently working on a project where there are 6 apprentices, he is naturally seen as a leader and the person to follow, due to his work ethic, quality of work, knowledge and willingness to carry out the task that he has been set
