Members’ Meeting – 13 April 2026 | People & Skills

Our first Members’ Meeting of the year took place at the impressive Ibstock I-Studio in Hatton Garden and introduced our new themed approach to quarterly meetings. The focus for the day was People & Skills, recognising that attracting, developing and retaining skilled bricklayers remains one of the greatest challenges facing our industry.

With labour shortages continuing to impact productivity, project delivery and business growth, the meeting explored how contractors can invest in training, embrace new learning opportunities and build a sustainable workforce for the future.

Members received an exclusive insight into the newly launched Ibstock Academy, which showcased how manufacturers are investing in training facilities, apprenticeships and technical education to support the wider construction industry. The session highlighted the importance of collaboration between manufacturers, contractors and training providers to ensure the next generation of bricklayers has the skills needed to meet future demand.

The AofBC Skills & Education team provided an update on the Association’s expanding range of NVQ qualifications and assessment routes, demonstrating how members can upskill existing employees, support apprentices and gain recognised qualifications with minimal disruption to site operations.

The team from OBEX also presented their innovative RapidTray® DPC System, demonstrating how modern construction products can improve installation quality, increase productivity and help reduce defects on site. The presentation reinforced how embracing innovation alongside traditional craftsmanship can deliver better outcomes for both contractors and clients.

The meeting concluded with an open discussion on current industry challenges, allowing members to share experiences and ensure the Association’s future activity continues to address the issues that matter most to brickwork contractors.

Following the meeting, members gathered at The Winemakers Club for an informal evening of networking, bringing together both Full and Associate Members.

Over food and drinks, contractors, manufacturers and suppliers continued conversations from the afternoon, discussing recruitment, training initiatives and opportunities for greater collaboration across the supply chain. The relaxed setting encouraged members to build new relationships, strengthen existing partnerships and share best practice, demonstrating the value of the Association’s growing community.
